- The son of former NBA player Joe Jellybean Bryant, Kobe Bryant's life was steeped in basketball. Moving to Italy at six, he honed his skills with diverse play styles. Returning to the U.S., Kobe attended Lower Merion High School and declared for the NBA draft straight out of high school. Drafted by the Charlotte Hornets in 1996, he was quickly traded to the Los Angeles Lakers, where he spent his 20-year career. Known for his work ethic, competitiveness, and skill, Kobe led the Lakers to five NBA championships and earned 18 All-Star selections and the 2008 NBA MVP Award. He supported youth sports and education, and after retiring, won an Academy Award for his short film Dear Basketball in 2018. Kobe and his daughter Gianna tragically died in a helicopter crash on January 26, 2020. His legacy inspires countless young athletes worldwide.
